Thirst For It
Matthew 5:1-12
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled (Matthew 5:6).
Extending the thoughts we shared yesterday, I want to challenge us to cry out to God to give us a hunger for His presence and thirst for the water of His word.
According to Adam Clarke, “Strong and intense desire after any object has been, both by poets and orators, represented metaphorically by hunger and thirst”. So, when Jesus told his listeners, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5: 6), He meant to say that blessed is the one who has strong desire for the things of God. We need this kind of hunger too.
Commenting on this verse, Adam Clarke added, “When the soul is awakened to a sense of its wants, and begins to hunger and thirst after righteousness or holiness, which is its proper food, we know that it must be purified by the Holy Spirit, and be made a partaker of that living bread, John 8:48, or perish everlastingly”.
The question is: Is there a hunger in your heart for the things of God? Do you long to grow in your walk with God? Are you longing for more of God and His word? Do you long to know Him and understand His word more? It is time to go back to God and ask Him to give you a hunger for Him?
Shalom.
