Seared Conscience
Timothy 4:1-5
Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron (1 Timothy 4:2
What is conscience? Professor Charles Finney defines conscience as a “moral function of reason or intellect …
It is that power of the mind that affirms and enforces moral obligation, and that pronounces upon the desert of obedience or of disobedience”.
He further defines a seared conscience as “the refusal or neglect of the reason, or that power of the mind to enter into
judgement … and make these emphatic representations of moral obligation or of guilt.”
Friend, a heart that is seared with hot iron has disconnected itself from the influence of the Holy Spirit and the word of God to guide its moral judgment, religion and intellect. It is a heart that has chosen to go its own way and be its own lord. Yet, this is not what God wants for us.
The evidence of seared iron is seen in the activities that are engaged in by those who have it. The Bible says, “Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth” (1 Timothy 4:2-3). Are we guilty of any of these?
It is time to examine ourselves so that we do not get into trouble too. It is time to seek the Lord and repent of our sins. Let us pray.
Your Turn
- Pray for yourself.
- Pray for your friends too. The Lord wants us to repent.
