Relationship And Reciprocity

Ruth 3:1-18
One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for ” (Ruth 3:1, NIV).

Relationships thrive on reciprocity. Someone had said that any relationship without reciprocity will die. This is true because we all live on the principle of sowing and reaping;  giving and receiving. To reciprocate is to give, feel in return. It is to give and receive or interchange a favor received.

Once Naomi came to this realization she decided to do something about her relationship with Ruth. She thought about Ruth’s condition as a young widow. She said, “My  daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for (vs. 1, NIV). Uh! How kind of her. This was her desire in Chapter One (see Ruth 1:9).

One good turn deserves another. But how good are we in following this truth. How are we doing in our relationships? Are we good takers and poor givers? How are we doing in
reciprocating the love and kindness we have received in our relationships? Are we reciprocating the love of our Savior by loving Him in return and sharing His love with others?

As children, how are we doing in reciprocating the love that our parents show to us? As spouses, are we taking each other’s love and commitment for granted? It is true that sooner or later, someone would have showed interest in marrying Ruth, but it was a good thing that Naomi took the initiative. Look for ways to reciprocate the love and care that you are receiving in your relationship too.

Your Turn

  • Pray for ways you can reciprocate the love of God for you.
  • Pray for others in your circle of influence and look for ways to bless them.

Song: I will give You all my worship. I will give You all my praise.
