Genesis 26: 1-6; 12-13
The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt, but do as I tell you. Live here as a foreigner in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. … (Genesis 26:2-3, NLT).

From our life experiences and the Scriptures, we understand that it is not unusual to face difficulties. In fact, the Bible is full of examples of nations, men and women who experienced severe times of famines.

Just like his father, Isaac experienced a time of famine too. He moved to Gerar. Although, it appeared his destination was Egypt just like his father, God appeared to him and stopped his plans. This appearance made the difference between this story and the one we read yesterday.

The story of Elimelech and his family would have been different if God had appeared to him. Why do I say so? It is because I believe God does not test any man (see James 1:13). If He asks you to stay in a place, He will protect you and provide for you. If He asks you to go, then He has a reason for saying so.

I believe if God had told Elimelech to move his family, the three men would not have died in the land of Moab. God would have still found a way to bring Ruth into the lineage of King David if that was the goal.

Thank God, Isaac obeyed. He planted and became a wealthy man. It is my prayer that we will learn from him, cultivate the habit of seeking God’s face before making major decisions so that we can avoid any unplanned consequences (see Proverbs 3:5-6).

Your Turn

  • Do you have the habit of praying to God about your life?
  • How often do you consult God for direction before taking major decisions?
  • Talk to God and pray for yourself.

Song: Jesus, You are my firm foundation.
