Labor Prompted By Love

2 Kings 4:8-17 (vs. 10)
Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us (2 Kings 4:10, NIV).

The Shunammite woman’s story in 2 Kings Chapter 4 provides a good example of how our labor could be prompted by love. Her love for God led her to demonstrate hospitability and benevolence to the man of God.

Out of love she encouraged her husband to join her in serving God through His servant, Elisha. She said, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God.  Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us” (2 Kings 4:9-10). Unknown to her, her reward would come.

In the same way, I believe as believers we can serve others with love in whatever vocations. For example, we can design a shoe with love because we know it will beautify the wearer. As pastors, we can care for our flock because they are precious to God. As a medical doctor, you can care for your patient knowing that God is using you to improve life.

When we begin to think and act this way, our perspective to our duties will change. We will become agents of change. The goal of reading and studying the word of God is to change us. Let us apply God’s word to our lives. Shalom.

Your Turn

  • Pray that this word will change you and the way you see your job and vocation.
  • Pray that God will fill our heart with love for Him and for His people so that our labor and service to others will be prompted by love and humility.

Song:  Forever, O Lord. Your word is settled in heaven.
