Jephthah, The Gileadite

Judges 11:3-11
…Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob … (Judges 11: 3).

Although he was rejected by his brothers, Jephthah did not fight them. Instead he left and formed what might be called a gang today. Some men discovered the leadership qualities in him and followed him. With them he learned the art of leading and fighting the more.

When the time came, the elders of Gilead visited him to ask for his help. I am sure Jephthah must have been fighting some small battles around his village for these men to have recognised him and called him. This shows us the importance of training and preparation while we are waiting for God’s time to lift us and promote us.

Apart from developing his gifts, Jephtah had mastered the art of doing business and negotiation. He knew his worth. He negotiated his reward with the elders of the land. Tactically, he reproved them for what they did to him, yet he was willing to help. It was this that brought him to the centre stage in the history of Israel.

Friend, do you know your worth? Or you are selling yourself cheap? Some would say, ‘Let me just get a job, any amount will do’. It may work at the beginning, but it is not the best way to prosper in life. Friend, anything is not good enough for you. Know your worth and the value you will add to the organisation and bargain a good pay.
