How To Have Assurance
1 John 1:1-4
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled … we declare to you… (1 John 1:1, 3).
From today we will begin to look at how we can have assurance of salvation. If we know that we are saved and our salvation is secure in Christ, we will stand firm and be strong. We will also be able to withstand the winds of doubt and strange doctrines. To do this, we must empower ourselves with the word.
First, we need to have the right doctrine. By doctrine we mean, having knowledge of the body of truth that is centered on the gospel of Jesus Christ and around the Christ that the gospel preaches. It means that we must not only believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, but we must believe in the truth He represents and delivered to us.
John the Apostle writes, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled … we declare to you…” (1 John 1:1, 3). John revealed the difference between knowing and believing. One is having knowledge about something; the other is heart knowledge. It is having a settled knowledge in what you know and have experienced.
Someone has said, “True assurance comes only to those who abide in the true biblical doctrine of Christ”. This is what we must seek after. Shalom.
