A Peacemaker
Genesis 13:1 – 12
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren”. (Genesis 13:8).
Abraham was a man of peace. This is another strength I observe in his life. He chose to live at peace with everyone he met including his nephew, Lot. No wonder the King of Salem blessed him later. See Genesis 14.
The Bible says. “Now the land was not able to support them… for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together. And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock” (Genesis 13:67). Abraham observed it and realized how dangerous strife could degenerate to. He called Lot and proffered a solution. This led to their separation.
By this gesture, Abraham demonstrated that he was a peacemaker. He was humble. He regarded others better than himself. He did not usurp his position as Lot’s uncle to lord it over him. He talked to him in a friendly manner. Would to God that we will be able to resolve our family problems in this manner.
What lesson can we take from this? We should be peace makers and seek to be others-centered. The Bible says, “Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself … be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing” (Philippians 2:3- 4, TLB). May the Lord help us in Jesus’ Name.
Shalom.
