“Chapter And Verse” 172 Further

Luke 5:1-11
But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”
Luke 5:5.

Here is another story that will teach us more truths about resting in God’s word:

“A young operator in a Lancashire Mill is known by the name “Chapter and Verse,” because he will believe nothing on religious subjects apart from the clear testimony of God’s Word. To all questions, cavils, and opinions expressed, his answer is, “Give me chapter and verse.” It is good to rest on God’s word.

This man asked for scripture references to be sure that his faith does not rest in the wisdom of man. Paul says, “My speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

From today’s Bible reading, we can see that Peter had a choice to make; to either rely on his fishing experience or believe the word of Jesus. Thankfully, he said, “Nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net” (Luke 5:5).

When we are committed to the word of God and believe it, we will see God’s intervention in our lives too. The word that will find root in us is the word we have received and believed. Shalom.

Your Turn

  • Pray for the grace to fall in love with the word of God.
  • Pray that you will love the word more than your necessary food.
