Sorrow Of The Heart

Psalm 119:25-32
My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word (Psalm 119:28).

To be sorrowful is to be sad or unhappy. It means to be distressed and mournful. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines the word sorrow to mean “a feeling of sadness or grief caused especially by the loss of someone or something” Something or someone that makes you sorrowful is a cause of grief or sadness.

Oftentimes when we are sorrowful, our mind is filled with pain. We know we have to move on but our mind would not let go. How do you deal with that when you are seeking the Lord for direction? How do you manage your pain when you need a word from the Lord? The psalmist says, “My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word” (Psalm 119:28).

Friend, sorrow will weary your soul. The only way is to seek the Lord and read His word. Remaining in sorrow will hinder your ability to hear from God. Sorrow is a joy stealer. We draw water from the well of salvation with joy (see Isaiah 12:3). Sorrow will keep you focused on the past. It focuses you on yesterday’s failure.

Take your pain and sorrow to the Lord and let Him fill your heart with hope for a better tomorrow. The longer we wallow in self-pity, the more difficult it would be to hear God. God loves you. Do not celebrate sorrow. Celebrate God’s faithfulness. He will speak to you again and strengthen you with His word. Shalom.

Your Turn

  • Thank God for this word of hope.
  • Take your pain and sorrow to the Lord. Ask Him to help you with your past failures and speak to you again.

Hymn: My hope is built on nothing less.
