Abraham’s Weaknesses
Genesis 12:10-20; 20:1 – 2
… he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister… my life will be spared because of you.” (Genesis 12:11- 13, NIV).
Abraham was a man of many strengths, yet he had his weaknesses. He was not perfect. He had his moments of failure, depression and family crises too. So, we can relate and learn from him.
The first weakness I saw in the life of Abraham was fear. His fear manifested in many ways. This includes:
- The fear of death. Abraham was afraid of being killed by the Egyptians because of Sarah’s beauty. He arranged with her to tell lies that they were brother and sister. Personally, I believe his fear of death surpassed the fear of losing Sarah to other men. He said, “Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.” (Genesis 12:13, NIV).
- The fear of the unknown. In Genesis Chapters 12 and 20, Abraham preempted the action of the Philistines and that of Pharaoh. His life had not yet been taken but the fear of the unknown led to the plan to lie and cover up his marital
Friend, God does not abandon us because we have weaknesses. He works through them because He knows we are a work in progress. It is my prayer that your fears and weaknesses will turn you to God and not away from God. Shalom.
Your Turn
- Are there weaknesses in your life that are ruining your relationship with God and others?
- Do you still tell lies to cover up rather than trust God to help you sort things out?
- Talk to God. He is waiting for your call.
